Parental Tips of the Month for Children’s Safety

Children and especially those younger than 3 years are at risk of choking. A choking hazard happens when an object (food/toy) is stuck in the airway, where the air doesn’t flow normally into or out of the lungs, causing the child to not breathe properly. Young children tend to put things in their mouths to explore them; and in order to protect them, parents can follow the below tips to protect their children from any choking hazard:

1. Avoid foods that can block their airways
   (e.g. nuts, popcorn, whole grapes, raw carrots,
   raisins, hard candies, or toffees and
   chewing gum.)

2. Ensure children's meals are served in small
    bites and are well-cooked (e.g. cutting whole
    grapes into 4, remove the tough skin,
    well-cooked pasta and vegetables etc.)

3. Teach your children to sit down at mealtimes,
    and encourage them to chew the food
    thoroughly, and not to talk or laugh with food
    in their mouths.

4. Keep items such as jewelry, coins, buttons,
    batteries, balloons, pins, rocks,...etc. out of
    children's reach.

5. Follow age recommendations for toys, especially
    those that include small parts, and make sure
    toys are in a good condition (no sharp edges
    or broken parts).

6. Finally, parents' supervision is the best tool to
    protect children from any hazard!
